WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. Justin Amash is still charting his own path in Congress, becoming one of only 33 Republicans in the House to vote against a leadership proposal to put off any debate over raising the debt ceiling for several months.Amash, a second-term congressman from Cascade Charter Township in west Michigan, and the other Republicans joined 111 Democrats in voting against the bill, which now heads to the Senate for consideration. President Barack Obama has indicated he will sign the legislation and it is expected to pass the Senate. Michigan Reps. Dave Camp of Midland and Candice Miller of Harrison Township were the prime sponsors of the bill, which works like this: With the nation having already hit the $16.4-trillion debt ceiling, it would allow the U.S. Treasury to pay bills regardless of the ceiling into May. In the meantime, it would require the pay of members of both chambers of Congress to be withheld as of mid-April if they can’t agree on budget legislation. The Senate hasn’t passed a budget resolution for several years, knowing it would set off a battle over spending cuts that could be tough to resolve. The House legislation passed 285-144. The Michigan opposition included Amash and the five Democrats who represent the state, including those who represent Detroit propoer, John Conyers and Gary Peters. Eight Republicans from the state supported the legislation.Amash has crossed Republican leaders on several occasions during his first term and he was removed from a spot on the Budget Committee in recent months by House Speaker John Boehner. This month, Amash was part of an effort to threaten Boehner’s speakership, voting for another candidate. Boehner won nonetheless. Both Peters and Amash put out posts on Twitter suggesting that no matter their policy differences, they have much the same feelings about the legislation putting off a decision on raising the debt ceiling. Amash tweeted: “This isn't real compromise; it's more can-kicking.”Peters tweeted: “It’s time for Congress to stop kicking the can down the road & get to work.”
